Research Project
Here I will discuss artwork and their artists from the website drawingcenter.org, particularly five artists that I admire and 5 artists that I don't understand or may not find as appealing and one that is meaningful to me and why.
Lori Esposito
"transcient gaze"
Lori and her work interest me because I find it pretty cool how she manages to pull shapes and faces from a seemingly endless void of abstract swirl. Even when considered separately, spirals and depth create the illusion of a vortex almost coaxing me in to the work itself.
Ken Resseger
"manifold projection 4"
I enjoy the many colors Ken uses in his work. The doubling effect almost seems necessary, as if it wouldn't be finished without the other half. It is similar to the rorschach test and so for that reason, as he said and does the test, people would see different things in the art in their minds eye.
Paul Santoleri
"omega warm garden sunrise"
I really like how Santoleri doesn't really have a limitation by any borders of his canvas. He lets his art explode out onto the walls, floor, and ceiling of wherever he is. One thing that would be very interesting to see would be his ideas in color. Dripping pools of invented colorful nature from the artists mind.
Whitney Wood Bailey
"extraordinary geometries
Whitneys colorful abstract artwork instantly caught my eye. I can't help but feel a smile start to form as I'm reminded of life being colorful as a child. I also like the questions the artist herself poses in spirituality and in sacred geometry.
Helga Edith
"der Himmel hat Absichten, von denen niemand weiss"
The sky has intentions of which nobody knows
I like Edith's use of color and lines to give this image of what I perceive as neurons in the brain firing, essentially life. The color would represent how important color is in our loves and what each color may represent emotionally, as emotions are a natural aspect of life. The piece seems to be one huge connected network of lines and color, similar to the huge network of connections we have in our world to all life.
Artists I Don't Understand or Appreciate
Sandra Perlow
This artists work was a bit too abstract for me. Its as if she wanted there to be a message and for that message to be conveyed but its not exactly clear. I get an emotion of distress or loneliness from what appears to be a girl buried in her knees and hair.
Ellen Kozak
Ellen Kozaks work is fairly abstract. Most of her pieces are similar in scheme, a solid cover that is the entire canvas, lines of a slightly darker shade than the first, and a random splatter of dots of color. Of course she had her reasons and meaning for it all, however I myself can't decipher it.
Kelsey Knutson
Knutsons paintings to me seem pretty simplistic in nature, so much so it almost becomes abstract. One could say that it is too simplistic and looks almost as if it were done by a child. Kelsey's art work is puzzling to me to say the least.
Nico Pam Dick
Nico Pam Dick's artwork is very simple, almost always containing only one image with little detail. Apparently he feels it is strong enough to convey meaning. I don't sense any besides a free imagination.
Kevin Reay
Though I don't quite understand his works, I do find them interesting, and very powerful. The use of a single eye reminds me of the eerie eye of the illuminati.
Lori Esposito (Favorite Artist)
Lori and her style of artwork stuck out to me as the most interesting simply because of its intensity and ability to captivate, me at least. Simply by using lines as spaces she was able to create the appliance of endlessness in her art. A style such as this has been in my interest ever since I first learned about contour lines and using them as tools for space. I have always wanted to create a piece of art similar to one of Esposito's style. However in my vision I imagine the negative space to be filled with color for a more psychedelic inspired look. Another great thing about her style is that it is not only abstract, but can be used to form images within the abstract void to tell a story or convey a message. I'm excited to create my own art and use Lori as a stylistic model and hopefully even be able to paint and apply color.
